Common Tilefish

Tilefish

Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps · Tilefish · Saltwater

Range

Western Atlantic Ocean — from Nova Scotia south through Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico. Found on the outer continental shelf and upper slope in 250–1,500 feet over clay and sand bottom with abundant sponges and worm burrows. A beautiful, colorful deepwater fish — vivid yellow spots on a blue-green background. Outstanding eating — firm, white, sweet meat often compared to lobster. An increasingly popular deep-drop target with electric reels.

Water Temperature

50°F–58°F. Found along the thermal boundary of warm Gulf Stream water and cold shelf water at the continental shelf edge. Burrows into the soft bottom.

Tackle & Bait

Best Lures:
Large vertical jigs at 400–1,200 feet produce strikes. Electric reels are essentially required for consistent Tilefish fishing at these depths.

Best Baits:
Fresh whole squid are the top bait. Fresh cut clam works very well. Multi-hook rigs on electric reels dropped to 400–1,200 feet near the continental shelf edge are the standard approach. Canyon fishing trips out of New Jersey and Maryland target Tilefish in deep water with electric reels.

Game Qualities

Typically 5–20 lbs. Trophy fish reach 50+ lbs. World record: 56 lbs 4 oz from Maryland. Stunning coloring — blue-green above with yellow spots and iridescent sheen.

Size: 2.5 ft   Edibility: Good
