The lake is 26 feet from full and simply beautiful right now, the main lake has a surface temperature of about 79 degrees and a little cooler up river. There is still some debris floating around so be a cautious boater out there.
TROUT
The trout bite is doing big things. We're getting reports of limits being caught by the 49 Bridge and between the two bridges, basically fishing with Kokanee set- ups. Jimmy Delfino put 9 nice rainbows in the boat this week using a pink Apex with a pink dodger / white fish scale and hoochies. They report fishing 25-60 feet of water and believe it or not the speed you fish at is very important, the magic number is 1.6-1.8 mph. The water temperature is cooler in the river channel at around 75 degrees.
KOKANEE
The fishing on the lake is a little different this spring with the high water and all. The Kokanee are on a slow bite, but they are big and you have to invest the time on the water. Most of the Kokanee are being caught around the spill way and down by the dam. Most fisherman are fishing down to 30' - 40'. Gary Burns of "Take it to the Limit Guide Service", reports putting a nice 2 lb. 7oz kok on the boat and unfortunately lost 2 more. But still landing 23 nice bows all on Kokanee gear- pink and purple Apex with a small chunk of night crawlers with no blade was the top setup. The bite will get better. (There were a few claims to pulling in kokanee last week, which unfortunately were misidentified and turned out to be trout instead). So we continue to wait for the big bite to start.
BASS
Well if there is one thing that is unpredictable this year, it's the pattern on New Melones . The bass fishing is good. Top water is working in the early morning and late afternoon. Fisherman have weighed fish in using everything from dark colored Senkos , drop-shot rigs and spinner blades. With a little more warm weather a true pattern will show. With the high water this year, it will make for some great habitat for this years' hatch, giving them a higher chance to make it to a safe size.
Well the lady anglers were showing strong this last week...
"CG" Strom of Angels Camp, hooked a nice 5 lb. beauty this week reported on a Senko. This was also reported to be "CG"s personal best. Congratulations "CG", keep them coming.
