Crappie are on the bite at Wohlford Lake

Due to a request from the hatchery the catfish plants have each been pushed back one day and are now scheduled to occur on Thursdays, every other week, beginning with the 14th. The best baits for catfish are cut mackerel or chicken liver and either end of the lake is a good location. Stop by the ranger station for a doughbait recipe that works well for both catfish and carp.
Bass fishing is best in the early morning and late afternoons. Thomas Janenko of Vista landed a 7.15# Bass using crankbait on Senior Shoreline. Shad raps, crawdads, and dark colored plastics are all good baits. Bass can be found lurking near submerged rock piles.
Crappie are being caught almost exclusively in the early mornings. Crappie are most often caught using small jigs or live golden shiners. Jerry Johnson of Ontario, Ca. had the largest crappie of the month so far with a 2.20# fish caught on a lip ripper crappie jig in boat Dock Cove. Nathan Steckert of Saginaw, Michigan weighed in a 2# Crappie caught on a nightcrawler at the South Shore Rock Pile. It has been an excellent year for bluegill, which have been both larger and more plentiful.
