Catfish as a whole has been slow, but Victor Hernandez and Jackie Young combined for a 19# double limit last Saturday in Willow Cove near the East Buoys using nightcrawlers and cut mackerel . The best bait for catfish are cut mackerel or chicken liver and the East end of the lake is probably the best location. Stop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works well for both catfish and carp.
The competition for top bass of the month has been furious. Several medium sized bass have been recorded this week. First, Martin Arenas weighed in a 5.30# bass on Saturday caught and released on a green plastic worm at Bass Point. Then on Tuesday, young Hayden Heck of Valley Center caught and released a 5.65# bass at the South Shore rock Pile on crankbait. Finally, Mark Smith of Dana Point landed a 6.40# bass on spinnerbait off Senior Shoreline which he also released. Bass can most often be found lingering around submerged rock piles.
